In Saudi Arabia, more than 2.5 Lakh foreigners lost their jobs in three months. However, the unemployment rate among the natives declined during the same period. With the completion of repatriation in various sectors, there are indications that more foreigners will lose their jobs.
The country had 10.46 million foreign workers in the second quarter of last year. But as of the end of the third quarter, there were only 10.2 million foreign workers in Saudi Arabia. That means 2,57,200 foreigners lost their jobs in three months. This includes private sector employees, domestic workers and agricultural workers.
With this, the number of foreign workers has come down by two and a half per cent. However, it is noteworthy that the unemployment rate among the natives declined during the same period. The unemployment rate among the natives has come down to 14.9 per cent from 15.4 per cent. At present, 7.9 per cent of males and 30.2 per cent of females are unemployed. There are indications that more expatriates will lose their jobs in the coming years as indigenization continues to be strong in various sectors.
