Almost half a million foreign engineers left the country last year. Domestication and the economic crisis faced by the medium sized enterprises have resulted in dropouts.
More than 24,000 foreign engineers have left the country, according to data released by the Saudi Council of Engineers. Over three thousand native engineers were newly registered with the council during the same period. At the end of last year, more than 1,63,000 (1,63,120) engineers, including 38,000 native engineers, were registered with the Saudi Council of Engineers. Saudi Arabia had one and a half million (1,49,000) foreign engineers in 2018, but it has fallen to one lakh in recent years.
The slowdown of foreign engineers is thought to be due to the gradual domesticization of the country and the financial problems faced by the medium sized enterprises. According to an agreement between the Saudi Ministry of Labor and Social Development and the Saudi Council of Engineers, only engineers with at least five years of work experience are allowed to be hired. Moreover, it is mandatory for the newly arrived engineers to conduct job interviews and personal interviews.
