Riyadh: Leading economist Ahmad al-Shahari has proposed reducing the working hours of the private sector to 30 hours a week. Such a proposal is for jobs that do not pay more than 8000 riyals.
Its main advantage is that it allows extra time for a fair wage and allows low-income people to do other jobs that can increase their income. Ahmad al-Shahari says it is also a solution to the wage crisis in the private sector.
The move will boost revenue in the healthcare, retail and service sectors
Ahmed al-Shahari added that more time will be given to other activities, including activating technology. Reducing working hours can also create opportunities for students to work part-time and increase attractive job opportunities for foreigners. Al-Shahari explained that this would help reduce the issuance of new visas in the workplace and ensure the supply of well-paid jobs.
Meanwhile, the Shura Council had earlier decided to amend the labor system to benefit 20 million Saudi employees working in the private sector, reduce their weekly working hours to 40 hours and allow two days off after five consecutive working days.
