SAUDI ARABIA ELIMINATE FLOGGING PUNISHMENT

The Saudi Arabian Supreme Court is preparing to implement a directive from top authorities demanding the elimination of the flogging involved in Saudi judicial decisions, a leading Saudi daily has reported.

In addition, some media reports have suggested that the Supreme Court may direct the General Commission to issue a guideline for courts to limit their discretionary punishments to jail sentences, fines, or both.

It is also noteworthy that the Supreme Court General Commission, by a majority vote, has ruled that the courts are sufficient to limit discretionary punishments to either imprisonment, fines, or both.

Eliminating the whiplash conviction is only the latest in a series of steps taken by the Saudi government to reform the judiciary.

At the end of last year, a member of the Saudi Shura Council, Faisal al-Fadil, called for the repeal of the whipping scandal and should be limited to retaliatory cases
