Foreigners banned from working as imams in mosques in Makkah

The Makkah Mosque Department has issued a directive banning foreigners from working as imams in mosques and Juma mosques in Makkah. There is a proposal to ban foreigners from serving as teachers in Tahfidul Qur'an classes in mosques. It is also suggested that the mosques and Juma Masjids in Makkah should ensure that people from a particular country do not serve as Imams and Tahfeedul Qur'an class teachers.

On the contrary, the circular issued by the Masjid Affairs Department said that if any foreigners are found working as Imams and Qur'anic class teachers in any of the mosques, they should immediately report the matter and take necessary action accordingly. Earlier, the Ministry of Mosques had strongly advised that Saudis not approved by the Ministry of Mosques should not be appointed as Imams and Tahfeedul Qur'an teachers in mosques and that foreigners should not be temporarily appointed as Imams and Tahfeedul Qur'an teachers.
