Eligibility Test for Foreign Workers in Saudi Arabia : First for Big Companies

The Ministry of Manpower and Social Development has made it mandatory for companies with 3,000 or more employees to make the first aptitude test for foreigners. Eligibility test is mandatory for institutions divided into five categories according to the number of employees.

Workers in companies with 3,000 or more employees will be required to take the aptitude test from July 1.

The aptitude test will be mandatory from September 1 for large companies with 500 to 2,999 employees, October 1 for medium-sized companies with 50 to 499 employees, October 1 for small firms with six to 49 employees and December 1 for small companies with category B employees from October 1 to 5.

Saad al-Ukhail, head of the professional testing division at Takamul Business Service Company under the Ministry of Manpower and Social Development, said workers who pass the qualifying exam will be given a five-year certificate. The certificate will be renewed after five years without examination. But no final decision has been made in this regard. The exams will be conducted in Arabic, English, Hindi, Urdu and Philippine, which represent 80 per cent of foreign workers in Saudi Arabia.

The qualifying test targets 1.7 million workers in Saudi Arabia, employing 1,000 people. Everyone will be given three chances to pass the exam. Those who fail a third time will be deemed unfit and deported. Saad al-Ukhail said that Saudi Arabia wants to free the local labor market from unskilled workers, which is a huge burden on the national economy.
